WHOA!

The story is told of an Uncle of mine who lived on a farm in Stoddard County, Missouri and was accustomed to farm work using teams of horses. He plowed fields with horses and used teams as the power to pull other farm machinery. Farmers in the area also used teams of horses or mules to pull stumps and logs from the sloughs and swamps of Swampeast Missouri. My Uncle was very familiar with the use of wagons, that were pulled by teams of horses. Tractors were not yet a common thing on the farms in Southeast Missouri in the 1920's and not very many rural people had automobiles. Someone in the family bought an automobile and one day they were attempting to show my Uncle how to operate this new fangled contraption. They had driven back into the farm fields on some of the farm lanes that separated the fields of crops and were coming back to the house and my Uncle was driving. He was doing great and had managed to shift gears pretty well. When he came to where the lane entered the barnyard, there was a gate across the lane and he pulled back on the steering wheel and yelled, Whoa, Whoa, WHOA! And there went the gate.
